Assalammualaikum..
I am a new teacher which had just been posted early this year. It has been a month I've been teaching in this school but my major problem is I have difficulties controlling my students during the lesson. I'm teaching English for year 2 & year 6.For each level, I'm teaching one excellent class and one weak class. I've tried almost all the methods which i could think of but sadly,none of them worked. Everyday, I will have to increase my voice and sometimes shout in class. Is there any solutions to overcome this problem? Besides that, what should I do to attract the students' attention so that they would love to learn English especially for the weaker classes? They couldn't even understand any English. Hope I can have some advice.

:) Hi, Irfah, salam. Welcome aboard! You're not the only one who's having trouble with English classes. Same goes for me here. But I always believe there must be some ways to motivate students in classroom teaching. Well, you can forget about having a quiet class, spoon feeding because English should be interesting, enjoyable and noisy! In fact, if you're creative enough, you can handle the weaker class better.

Well, I had tried several activities that really work with students. Most of them are games. You could adopt and adapt the games according to your classess competency and level. It was really fun and they enjoyed them. If I want to spit them all out here, it would take forever. So, you can find them in the internet, such as below;

http://www.mes-english.com/
http://www.eslhq.com/
http://www.esl-galaxy.com/index.htm
http://www.english-4kids.com/index.html

Through these websites above, you're not only going to find activities, but also supply with flashcards, worksheets which are printable.

I can tell you about one of the activities which I did with my Year 6 students. I distributed a grammar chant in adjective form to everyone. They started to shout high and low the adjective words with actions. For example ; BIG.....I AM BIG, HE IS BIG, SHE IS BIG. Then you can change into.....BIG, I AM BIG, HE IS BIGGER BUT SHE IS THE BIGGEST. Later when you give exercises to them, give them questions like text completion or note expansion or information transfer (construct simple sentences would be advisable). I guarantee, your students will be looking forward to your English class.

Don't worry if your students are strangers to the language and it's not wrong to use mother tongue translation as long as you could minimize it. So, au revoir and good luck! :love:
