Title: English - Paper 2
Description: Tough but easy to score if.....!
hartiniazhar - May 7, 2006 05:13 PM (GMT)
:) Starting last year.....English Language were divided into 2 papers in UPSR. Frankly, I find that Paper 2 is easy to score. I wouldn't want to compare with Paper 1 because the latter is more on understanding - competence of the language!
There are 3 questions on Paper 2. The first one is constructing at least 5 sentences using the words given based on the picture which is given too. Here are some tips for weaker pupils;
1. Write simple sentences, for example...if the picture is about occupation, you may want to start like this........."Pak Abu (give a name) is a rubber tapper."
2. Do not attempt on compound or complex sentences if you are not too sure.
3. Enrich pupils with vocabulary. Use more of English/Malay dictionary to help them.
4. Don't worry if you did not use any of the words given, as long as the sentences you write are accurate.
On question 2, is all about transfering the information and give reasons for one's choice.
1. Make sure your pupils understand whatever the information given. Dictionary is a big help!
2. Completing the table by transfering the information is the easiest part. All you need to do is carefully transfer the information according to the categories. I always stress to my pupils that try to avoid making errrors here.
3. Make sure the spellings of the words are accurate because if the words are written wrongly, it will be penalised.
4. Finally....writing about one's choice. Wisely, choose the one which you think you can write. Do not try to write about your opinion if you are not too sure. Write following the information given. For example...."I would choose the book as a present for my sister because it is cheaper.
On the final question, is similar to question 1. But here, phrases are given too.
1. You can use the words to write in any way you like.
2. You can write sentences or phrases without using the given ones. Personally, I won't penalise that...because I am more concerned with correct sentences written.
3. Construct simple sentences which could be comprehend.
Of course, you need to train the pupils in doing these questions. More importantly, reading and vocabulary are the two greatest help. For weaker pupils....it will take a long time to do this...but it will be fruitful. I tried before and it worked for my pupils. One of them scored B in English last year. I was happy because she was always getting C or D for English since Year 4.
p/s: Don't teach the pupils to translate Bahasa Melayu sentences to English sentences. It is wrong because the sentences would change in structure. In my 4 years experience of marking English UPSR Paper, I found many pupils tried this technique. :o

thanks for the tips...macam mana sistem pemarkahan? kesalahan grammar, kesalahan ejaan...
hartiniazhar - June 3, 2006 04:30 AM (GMT)
:)You're welcome. Glad to be able to help!
Minte maafle Cik Sherrina...takleh cerite banyak-banyak pasal tu. Sebabnye semuenye sulit. Tapi...teman bolehle bagi tips sikit!
Permarkahan sebenornye ikut Band. Contohnye; band A, band B, band C, band D dan band E. Setiap band ni ade kriterianya. Band A tu paling baik, band B & C sederhana, band D & E - teruk.
Kesalahan grammar - selalunye tengok pade ayatnye. Kalau tunggangterbalik memangle takde markah. Tapi kalau ade 1 or 2 or more mistakes, balik refer pada band.
Ejaan - even 1 error dalam satu perkataan dikira salah. Contoh : "bag" dieja "beg" - totally wrong!
One more thing...dalam Question 2 (part b) dimane budak kene pilih dan tulis kenape die pilih tu....sekirenye die buat pilihan die dpt satu markah walaupun lepas tu die merapu tah ape bende. Contoh below;
"I would choose the bus (dah buat pilihatn - 1 markah) because uiopjnopnieojdabopjndkahaap (merapu tah ape bende - no marks given).
sherrina - June 7, 2006 02:53 AM (GMT)
ohhh..kiranya konsep pemarkahan ialah cikgu cari mana nak kasi markah. bukan kita letak 100% dan drpd 100 markah tu, cari kesalahan2, potong satu2. berapa yg tinggal, itu le markah dia?
maknanya kita kene cari tang mana nak kasi markah. tang takleh kasi markah, kita tinggalkan. gitu ke?
hartiniazhar - June 8, 2006 10:39 AM (GMT)
:) Yes....you're right! Mane kite boleh kasi markah kite bagi walaupun markah tu cume 1 aje. Tapi kalau calon tu tulis merapu...blah,blah, blah sampai pemerikse tak faham...susahle...takdele markah. Saye taknak bandingkan dgn bangsa lain tapi anak Melayu kite ni ade 2 kategori.....yg. duduk di bandar besor takde masalah..cume minor errors here and there...tapi they can be very good dan gune bombastic words yg terpakse teman refer dalam dictionary. Tapi yg duduk di luar bandar ni...susah sikit...cume teman harap kalau boleh ajorle budak-budak ni buat ayat yg simple sahaja. Drill them orally...if you have to. Then they would know how to answer the questions. Memangle bukan bahasa ibunde kite...tapi BI ni macam satu bahase yg kite kene tahu...serupele dgn bahase lain macam bahasa Arab, bahasa Mandarin atau bahasa Tamil. Sedihnye...bile teman pernah jumpe satu kertas di mane takde jawapan tapi pade tpt jawapan tu die tulis dlm nada merayu..."TOLONGLE BAGI SAYE LULUS BI. SAYE ORANG SUSAH, ADIK BERADIK RAMAI, MAK BAPAK TAK KERJA!" Tak tahule kot budak ni menipu sebab die nak lulus....tapi itule attitude anak Melayu kite....belum ape-ape dah menyerah kalah! Susah nak cakap!

hartiniazhar - June 24, 2006 09:42 AM (GMT)
:) I don't know about English Form 1....tapi kalau nak diikutkan accuracy memangle budak kite lemah betoi! Selame teman belajor TESL di OUM, teman dapati satu aje. English in foreign countries such as England or USA, is not a problem to them. Tapi di sane bukannye ditekankan sangat accuracy ni...sebab ape yg penting you boleh converse in that language well even though gune mother tongue atau loghat. Contohnye macam orang Australia.....kalau di sini kite sebut,"Good day, mate!" tapi di sana disebut, "Good dai, mate!" - which is not wrong and it is acceptable there as a language. That's how they speak down under!
Teman selalu betulkan ayat anak murid teman setiap hari, contohnye - "Teacher, may I go to the toilet?" tapi bile teman tak stresskan accuracy, teman boleh terime macam, "Teacher, toilet?" - to me it's acceptable. Tapi...of course, when you teach exam classes like Year 6, accuracy is important because that would gain more marks in English paper.
*Glamourous footballer, David Beckham never passed his English paper because of his Manchester accent yang pekat but still the whole world knows him!
So, jangan expectle murid kite nak mahir berkomunikasi dalam English like English people....because we are second language learners, bound to have accent or mother tongue interference! As long as they know how to answer the questions and understands what they read....itupun dah cukup membuktikan yg kite berjaye membuatkan anak-anak murid kite dapat A.
*Don't force our kids to talk in English if they are not willing to. Encourage them!

thanks for sharing the tips. Kekadang sherrina pikir, nasib baik le sherrina mengajar di pinggiran KL. kalau di pendalaman, camne agaknya. Kesian gak sebab tgk level English skarang tak mcm dulu. Expectation tinggi. yelah, nak compete dgn budak2 bandar lagi. bagi senang sgt nnt budak bandar kacang aje. luar bandar kalau takde guru yg bagus dan peralatan mengajar yg bagus, kesian budak2.
Mcm haritu dlm The Star ulas kata2 salah seorang pembentang kertas kerja di MELTA, "ajar mereka English yang mereka akan guna waktu bekerja nanti. Dah lama sangat kita tekankan pada mende yg bukan2, yg akhirnya tak guna pun bila dewasa"

:) Bergune....bile deme masuk universiti. Especially nak grad...mesti lulus MUET. :hmm:
